Breeding is as much an art as it is a science. It's an art in the sense that you "create", by the decisions you make in choosing your mating alpacas, one of the most beautiful fibered animal ever placed on this earth.
It is also a science in which, by carefully studying the genetic make up of each of your breeding stock (by measuring specific parameters and how they are passed on to their offsprings, ie. EPD's) you can make a significant improvement in their progeny with each passing generation.
This has been Rancho Chico Alpacas breeding goals since our beginnings. We have centered our program on Elite Fibered Alpacas with extremely low micron counts and not necessarily the bold crimpy type fleece that is popular amongs certain judges when awarding ribbons. Those same judges would not award ribbons, by that criteria, to any vicuna. Again, which fiber is the best?
We keep hearing comments such as "the finest alpaca in the class" over and over. Those comments encourage and re-affirms us to continue breeding for vicuna fineness in our alpacas.
We have been selecting genetics from breeders well known throughout the world by their production of Elite fibers and share their vision of what really, really matters in the Alpaca Breeding Industry.
